Local charity “The Besom in Wirral” was recently delighted to receive a cheque for £1,830 from the Brethren of Elleray Park Lodge 5620 and the Province of Cheshire Area 1. ‘The Besom in Wirral’ is based at St Peters Church in Heswall and is the local branch of a national charity which was founded in 1987 by James Odgers. The Charity’s aim is to “Sweep away Suffering” and their symbol is a Besom – a brush made of twigs.
Across the Wirral the charity collects good condition unwanted items which can make a home more comfortable, such as: beds, tables & chairs, fridges, cookers, microwaves, settees; all of which are given free of charge to clients who have been recommended by Social Services and their partner organisations.
Gilly Laing from ‘The Besom in Wirral’ said, “We are grateful for all donations which can be used to help make people’s lives a little better. As many homes are flats and small houses, we like to give out small pieces of furniture and appliances”
‘The Besom in Wirral’s old van was taken off the road due to old age and a fund raising campaign was set up to help replace it. With the help of Cheshire Freemasons the Charity soon reached its target and a Transit high top van was purchased from a local supplier, thereby enabling the Charity’s valuable work to continue throughout the Wirral.
‘The Besom in Wirral’ has connections with teams on the Wirral carrying out decorating, small odd jobs and gardening work. More information on the Charity can be found at www.besom.com
