Due to pitch waterlogging the South Cheshire Masonic Golf Society reset their 50th Wheel Chair presentation evening to 6 July when they met at Eastham Golf Club. The Society has been running since 1976 initially under the name of the Ted Barker Memorial Golf Competition, every time members play a round of golf the proceeds go to purchase of an electric wheelchair for a disabled child. Over the past 41 years, fifty such chairs have been tailor made and presented. The Society had planned to present the 50th chair to 12 year Kean from Shropshire but at the last moment he was rushed into hospital to undergo emergency surgery on his legs, everyone wishes him well for a successful operation and rapid recovery.
The days golfing was enjoyed by 23 players who started their tournament with bacon sandwiches, later during the evening, they were joined by partners and friends for dinner. WBro’s George Mann and Adrian Davies both Cheshire APGM’s attended to give support, later WBro George Mann addressed the meeting to outline the scheme which has been sponsored by several organisations over the years and generated over £9 million nationally. The South Cheshire Masonic Golf Society are now independent where every penny is ploughed back to wheelchair purchase.
In August the Society will present their 51st special chair to Jack Woodfin at Northup Golf Club to mark the Tercentenary of Grand Lodge, hopefully, Kean will also be in attendance showing off the Societies 50th wheelchair. Unfortunately, there will always be disabled children but societies like this who contribute so generously to disabled children are our silent angles that make such a difference to a disabled child’s life, long may the Society continue.
