Captain’s Day for the South Cheshire Masonic Golf Society

Members of the South Cheshire Masonic Golf Society

Thursday 20th September was Captain’s Day for the SCMGS and was held at Frodsham. Although early cloud made the day uncertain, the hardy members drove off to enjoy their day, but sure enough within half an hour of play the first specs of rain turned into a heavy storm. Wets were quickly on as umbrellas turned inside out as the wind gusted around the course. By the time the first game had reached the 6th hole the greens had become water logged, the 7th hole turned back towards the clubhouse and as it was reached a rushing stream of water raced across the green.

Captain Rod McClelland regrettably made the decision to make the best of it and called the players in from the 7th green and that was it – to keep spirits up it was decided to have a Past Captain’s day next year when the prizes would be rolled over. But the day was not over yet – The 7 holes of play brought with it a wide range of scoring from 4 points upwards, the presentation to the winner with 16 points went to Noel Martin, runner up Arthur Preston with 14 points.

The society now looks forward to 2019 when eyes turn to Prestatyn in April. That day brings with it a new cup challenge for all winners and runners up in the previous season and will be in memory to a very much missed member being the ‘Gil Auckland Champion of Champion’s Trophy’. A Gala night at The Mill in Chester is planned for a Friday in early April 2019, and will include cocktails, a choice of fine food from the menu and an evening of music and dancing provided by the well-known ‘Penny Black’ duo and the ‘Alan Peters’ duo who will play a tribute to the Everly Brothers.

It is hoped to present a wheelchair that evening to the Neuro Muscular Dystrophy Centre in Winsford for use by patients, this chair funded by donations made to Gil Auckland who passed away recently, Gil was a founder member of the SCMGS in 1976 and has supported the cause unfailingly.

Noel Martin receives his ‘prize’
