If we glance through the old Minute Books of Dukinfield Masonic Hall, the minutes recorded by WBro A Bevins for 6th August 1935 show that, having elected WBro H Bates as their Chairman, and passed the payment of Accounts totalling £49 13s 9d;
Sadly, with the passage of time, the original flagpole which in 1935 had cost the princely sum of £16 15s 0d became rotten.
In an era when Freemasonry preferred to remain inconspicuous, the flagpole was not replaced.
With a new era of openness, the Hall Committee agreed that as part of the ongoing works to refurbish the hall, which are nearing completion, the flagpole should be replaced, and a replacement was donated by Hall Chairman, WBro Derek Marbeck.
On 6th August 2018, 83 years to the day from the original flag raising, WBro Marbeck was joined by members of the Hall Committee, including Area 4 Chairman WBro Steve Headdock, to once again raise the flag.
Whilst none present can recall the original flag raising, it seems appropriate to borrow WBro Bevins’ words, and record that the new flag was unfurled “ably and expressively” by the Hall Chairman, watched by his Committee and the Hall’s Neighbours.
Brethren from across the province will have an ideal opportunity to see the work that has been undertaken at Dukinfield over the Summer on Wednesday 7th November, when WBro Derek celebrates 50 years in Freemasonry at a meeting of Lodge of Good Fellowship 6910.
